The disposal of some food waste commonly found on a University campus can be conducted in an environmentally sound manner.

BMP

  • Vegetable oil, liquid animal fat, etc. is collected in a specialized container and recycled through a designated vendor to become biodiesel. Fats (vegetable oils, liquid animal fats, etc.) should be separated and recycled, or disposed of through rendering facilities.
  • Pre-consumer food waste such as fruits and vegetable scraps can be composted and utilized in landscape beds and sports fields on campus.
  • Non-meat food items can be composted and utilized for fertilizer.
